About Us
Katie and Tommy met in freshman chemistry class at Louisiana State University. Despite having been born nearly 5,000 miles apart, they hit it off right away. They discovered in each other a reciprocal love for traveling and a mutual indifference towards LSU football. Their first time abroad together, which sparked the idea of an around-the-world trip, was right after they met, when their individually-planned trips to London overlapped by 21 hours and they spent the entire night wandering the city together.
For the next two and a half years, Katie and Tommy continued their studies in Biology at LSU, where they are perhaps best known for spending the majority of their waking hours in the library. Tommy, who aspires to be a physician, volunteered on the ambulances of the Baton Rouge EMS department and recovered corneal tissue for the Baton Rouge Eye Bank. Much to Katie’s consternation, his beeping pager frequently interrupted their dates. Katie worked in a laboratory at the LSU Museum of Natural Science, where she pursued her passions in ornithology and evolutionary biology. While Tommy is glad she has found her calling, he still wishes she would wear gloves when skinning birds.
In the summer of 2007, Katie traveled to Peru on a collecting expedition with the Museum, while Tommy enrolled in an intensive Spanish course in Buenos Aires. Katie met him 6 weeks later, and they spent the rest of the summer traveling through Argentina, Bolivia, and Peru. Those 9 weeks proved that the more time they spent together, the more they loved being with each other. They got engaged the following November, and will be married on December 20, 2008. They look forward to moving to Boston in August, where Tommy will be attending Harvard Medical School and Katie will work towards a Ph.D at Boston University.
